National Energy AI Training Hub

The National Energy AI Training Hub (NEAT-Hub) is a flagship capacity-building initiative designed to accelerate Nigeria’s clean-energy transition through workforce development and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Supported by UK PACT, NEAT-Hub brings together the academia, industry and development partners to equip Nigeria’s current and future energy workforce with skills and AI tools needed to build a sustainable energy ecosystem.

A central component of the programme is the use of AI to reduce the Aggregate Technical and Commercial (ATC) losses in the current electricity distribution networks.

This problem threatens to spill over into the emerging renewable energy sector, posing significant risks to efficiency, sustainability and financial viability, potentially derailing the Nigerian Clean Energy Transition Plan. ATC losses could jeopardize the new renewable grids because current efforts in renewable energy initiatives prioritize generation (e.g., solar systems, mini-grids) while neglecting proactive safeguards against electricity losses, exposing a systemic vulnerability that risks replicating in the upcoming renewable networks.

A central component of the programme is the use of AI to reduce the Aggregate Technical and Commercial (ATC) losses in the current electricity distribution networks.

A core focus of NEAT-Hub is the use of AI to tackle the persistent problem of Aggregate Technical and Commercial (ATC) lossesin the current Nigeria’s electricity distribution networks. These losses pose a major threat to the energy sector and can derail the Nigerian Clean Energy Transition Plan. This is because without targeted interventions, the same losses that undermine today’s grid could spill over into the emerging renewable energy networks. This vulnerability exists because many renewable energy initiatives focus heavily on generation, while paying less attention to loss prevention. As a result, there is a real risk that ATC losses could be replicated in the upcoming renewable networks unless deliberate safeguards are integrated from the start.

At the core of NEAT-Hub is a commitment to inclusive and equitable energy transition. The initiative integrates Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) principles into all learning pathways, ensuring that women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups have meaningful access to emerging opportunities in clean-energy technology.
